13Q with SJ13

In a recent opporunity I was given the chance to interview Buffalo Bills wide reciever, Stevie Johnson, in a segment we called "13Q with SJ13."

CaptOTM: "What is the best part of living in Buffalo?"
SJ13: "Best part of living in Buffalo is knowing that you have a great job in Buffalo. Seriously, I'd have to say the people. They are one of a kind New Yorkers. I don't know if I'm going to get mugged or invited to the house for cookies and cocoa."

CaptOTM: "Do you have a pregame routine?"
SJ13: "No pregame routine. I don't really like routines and having to do things the same way. I'd rather be loose and go with the flow. When I feel like I'm in a routine, I don't really feel right. I have to be loose and have a clear mind to have fun.

CaptOTM: "What is your most memorable reception as a Bill?"
SJ13: "My most memorable catch as a Bills has to be my first touchdown versus the (New York) Jets. It felt so good to finally score a touchdown in the NFL."

CaptOTM: "What motivates you to get better?"
SJ13: "Watching other players arounf the league motivates me to go out and try to make the most of this opportunity I have. My family is my motivation, because I know I am taking care of them."

CaptOTM: "How do you want your career to be remembered?"
SJ13: "Well, when I first got to Buffalo I said I wanted to bring entertainment, excitement, and a different kind of energy to Buffalo. So that's how I want to be remembered, as the type of player that had fun and showed it on the field while taking care of business."

CaptOTM: "Can the fans expect to hear Stevie Styles on any upcoming Ya Boy tracks?
SJ13: "Yes, I will be doing some work with Ya Boy; it's going to be crazy!!! BlackCardBoyz with The CF WingTeam."

CaptOTM: "Most influential person in your life?"
SJ13: "My dad by far. He's been through a lot and has taught me a lot. He also had the opportunity to make it to a big college and the pros, but things went a different route, but he showed me how to be a SF Warrior."

CaptOTM: "Do you have any extra interest in possibly signing with a West Coast team, in order to be close to home?"
SJ13: "I can always be home. I've been home for 16, 17 straight years. I'm good where I am."

CaptOTM: " What is the most unusual thing a fan has asked you to autograph?"
SJ13: "To keep it PG, some kids have asked me to sign their cheeks. I guarantee you they don't have that autograph anymore. What a waste of good ink."

CaptOTM: "Can you share your thoughts on the NFL Lockout situation?"
SJ13: "I think it'll be a lockout during the offseason and maybe training camp, preseason; but I don't think it'll extend through the season. If it does, I know I listened to the vets and saved my mulah."

CaptOTM: "Why do you wear #13?"
SJ13: "I wore the 13 to be different in college. They gave me the option of a bunch of different 80's numbers and I specifically asked for 13 to be different. They say 13 is unlucky, I don't think so."

CaptOTM: "How different is the NFL from college?"
SJ13: Well instead of playing with teenagers, I am playing with adults, grown men with families. As far as football goes it's a different speed, but for the most part the samething I learned from Keenan Burton in college is the samething I apply here in the NFL and that's if you know or have an idea of what everybody is doing on the field things begin to slow down a little more."

CaptOTM: " What advice would you give a young WR? Or any young athlete?"
SJ13: "Stay focused on the goal you've set and don't let anyone tell you, you can't make it in life. At whatever you do in life, work on BECOMING A FACTOR TO THAT PROFESSION. Always be a student and stay humble, stay ready, stay hunger, and stay fly."

Thank you Stevie for the interview and we look forward to seeing you on the field!

Hairdo

In the Old Testament book of Judges the warrior Samson's strength was all in the locks of his hair. And while he lost strength by having his long locks cut, a young Buffalo Bills wide receiver, may have found a new strength.

Stevie Johnson entered the league in 2008 as a 7th round draft pick out of the University of Kentucky with long dreadlocks. Now three years later and quickly becoming a young playmaker in the NFL, Stevie no longer carries the long dreads. He now sports a brohawk that is becoming a favorite amongst fans of the Buffalo Bills. It seems as each week passes in the NFL season, Johnson has a new design shaved into the sides of his brohawk. So far this season, the young wide receiver has donned the Bills logo, his jersey number (13), his nickname "Styles", "CF" which represents Certified Flyguyz, and the quote he made more famous after his 3 touchdown performance against the Bengals, "Why So Serious."

Though I wouldn't credit his breakout season to a change in hairdo, but rather hard work and determination, the hairdo has won the Bills fans over. Two fans have even gone as far as sending out tweets to Stevie (@StevieJohnson13) that they too would don the hawk and/or designs into the sides of their hair if he (Johnson) makes the Pro Bowl this season. As fans conclude their portion of Pro Bowl voting, which ends on December 20, 2010; tune in to see if Stevie Johnson makes the Pro Bowl and follow these two fans (@homeslice5484 and @CaptOTM) to see them shave the hawk and designs into their hair.

Week 14 Update

With only 6 more days left for fan voting for the 2011 Pro Bowl in Hawaii here is where Stevie Johnson currently ranks amongst AFC wide receivers:

Yards per Game: 11th (29.3 behind the leader)
Touchdowns: 2nd (5 behind the leader)

Why So Serious? | WKBW News 7: News, Sports, Weather | Buffalo, NY | Local

Why So Serious? WKBW News 7: News, Sports, Weather Buffalo, NY Local: "After taking some shots, good and bad for his 'why so serious' Joker reference in Sunday's win over the Cincinnati Bengals, Bills wide receiver Stevie Johnson appeared on ESPN's First Take to explain his celebration"

Bills' Johnson catching on to the NFL game - Bills & NFL - The Buffalo News

Bills' Johnson catching on to the NFL game - Bills & NFL - The Buffalo News: "Stevie Johnson has a history of learning as he goes.
He's been that way his entire life.
'He was always a kid that if you showed him how to do something, it didn't take long for him to figure it out,' said Andre Lewis, Johnson's stepfather. 'And when he gets it, he gets better at it.'
The same can be said of Johnson's football career.
He never played quarterback until his senior year in high school and still became an all-state selection. He didn't play wide receiver until college and became one of the best ever at two schools.
In his third season with the Buffalo Bills, Johnson has gone from bench-warmer to playmaker. He leads the team in catches (44), yards (591) and touchdowns (six), numbers that far surpass the combined totals of his first two seasons (12 catches, 112 yards and two TDs)."

Why So Serious?

This past weekend Stevie Johnson continued his incredible season by taking on the persona of The Joker and defeating Cincinnati's Batman & Robin (Terrell Owens and Chad Ochocinco). Stevie and his Bills teammates had the last laugh in this one as the scored 35 unanswered points and overcame a 21 point deficit. After scoring his first of three touchdowns on the afternoon, Stevie proceeded by unveiling his undershirt which read, "Why So Serious?" the famous line from the lastest movie battle of Batman and The Joker. In what was another career day for Stevie, he finished the afternoon with 8 catches for 137 yards and 3 touchdowns.

Talented graphic artist and friend of Stevie Johnson's, Rochelle (aka SuperwomanSF on Twitter) has designed a series of "Why So Serious" tees that are now available at http://www.printfection.com/eclipzingdezignz/Certified-Fly/_s_371232. Check them out and support the Buffalo Bills very own Joker, Stevie Johnson.

BIlls' Johnson develops into quality wideout - NFL - Yahoo! Sports

BIlls' Johnson develops into quality wideout - NFL - Yahoo! Sports: "A lack of quality wide receivers was one of the Bills' weaknesses at the start of the season, but in recent weeks, the WR corps has become a position of strength.
No player has illustrated that better than Stevie Johnson, the 224th pick in the '08 draft who began the season as an unproven second receiver and was demoted to a backup role before emerging following back-to-back standout games in the slot. Johnson had five catches and two TDs in Week Five, both all-time highs for the third-year receiver. Two weeks later, after the team's bye week, Johnson had 8-158-1, setting career bests for catches and yards. It was also the fourth consecutive game in which Johnson had a TD catch.
Johnson can work the middle of the field, a skill the team needs without a quality tight end. And by doing so effectively, it has helped make deep-threat WRs Lee Evans(notes) and Roscoe Parrish(notes) more effective."

Bills WR Johnson breaking out with stellar play - Canandaigua, NY - MPNnow

Bills WR Johnson breaking out with stellar play - Canandaigua, NY - MPNnow: "Orchard Park. N.Y. — Now that he’s begun to make a name for himself, Buffalo Bills receiver Steve Johnson would like to clear up something about, well, his name.

He prefers, “Stevie.”

Though listed as “Steve” in the team’s media guide, on the roster and above his locker, Johnson can have his choice of names after showing an ability to pose a threat opposite Lee Evans in the Bills’ passing game.

Johnson has become only the eighth Bills player to score a touchdown receiving in four straight games. And he’s coming off a career outing in which he had 158 yards and a touchdown in a 37-34 overtime loss at Baltimore last weekend."
